During these summer months, the weather is very moderate, the days are long, and the fish are plentiful ... brown, rainbow, and brook trout are abundant throughout this time of year.

History of Fishing in Argentina. There were early attempts to introduce trout to Argentina by immigrants who were owners or supervisors of the big estancias in southern Patagonia. One story has it, that a certain ranch boss missed his native land and the fishing. Although he had beautiful waters around him there were no fish in them. So he decided to import eggs and that is how the sea run browns got its start in Patagonia. Official records say that it was not until 1904 that the first planting of trout took place with good results. The first planting were composed of brook, lake trout and landlocked salmon all coming from New York, USA. They were planted in lake Nahuel Huapi, Traful, Espejo and Gutierrez. More importation of fish eggs continued coming from the US, England and Germany with the same species and additionally adding rainbows, browns, Atlantic salmon and some species of Pacific salmon.

Angling Today In many bodies of water the average fish is eighteen to twenty-two inches and can be difficult to catch a smaller fish. In many streams you will find abundant amounts of fish ranging from the size of your wet fly to fourteen inches. Oh, the big ones are out there too, but as all anglers know, the big ones are big because they know what to eat and what not to eat.

Argentina covers over 1,000,000 square miles, an area larger and as diversified in climate, vegetation, and topography as the west coast of the United States. Vegetation varies from dry and arid to forests of giant cedar and laurel trees up in the Andes Mountains from the 1500 to 7000 foot elevation. The country's topography is very diversified. The Andes Mountains that stretch along the border of Chile have mountain peaks with elevations of over 20,000 feet that are covered with ice fields and glaciers. The Pampas and parts of Patagonia are flat with numerous rivers flowing from the Andes Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean.

Culture The heavy immigration of Europeans to the country in the late nineteenth to the twentieth century produced a heavy concentration of people of Spanish, Italian, French, German, Eastern European and British ancestry. Also in the immigration were Japanese, Syrians and Lebanese. With the immigration, the native Indians and the descendents of black slaves, Argentina produced a diversified culture.
